My name is Alayna Jones and I am 25 years old from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In May 2019, I graduated from Virginia Tech where I received a degree in Multimedia Journalism and a minor in Psychology.
I traveled abroad to Florence, Italy for the Spring 2018 semester. At Florence University of the Arts, I studied in two journalism classes and two Italian culture classes. I learned more outside the classroom that semester than I ever possibly could have anywhere else. I was lucky enough to travel to more than 20 different cities and immerse myself in the culture.
Senior year of college, while taking my last few classes, I interned at WSLS10 in Roanoke, Virginia. I then started there full time and have grown a lot professionally and personally over the 2.5 years I was there. I went from weekend p.m. producer to the 5 p.m. producer. In addition to producing I also helped with the station's social media and website.
I am now at KDKA in Pittsburgh as a weekend producer. I produce and write many stories everyday ranging in topics. My favorite stories are the community focus ones that each member of the Pittsburgh community can relate to in some way.
During my time in the newsroom, I help manage anchors and reporters while keeping track of breaking news. I am able to take complicated press releases and quickly write them into easy to understand scripts. Graphics are a big part of a newscast. I help come up with ideas for them to make sure the viewer can follow along easier. I also make sure the newscasts flow and stories looks clean and creative on air.
